AT Kanan [7EPE 1002] an EP released in India in 1961

Here we have a rare 7-inch 45RPM bundle of delight. This is the only officially released recording of AT Kanan (1920-2004) of which I am aware. See Kiran's comment below, however.

He was a guru at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta and was a member of the Kirana gharana. A few additional recordings can be accessed here.

Rarely for that time, full credits of the other instrumentalists (including the great tabla maestro Mahapurish Misra) are on the label.

Side A: Raga Bageshree
Side B: Thumri (Nadiya Kinare Mora Gaon)

  1. Excellent rip quality & share Richard. Great artist of Kirana Gharana. There are 2 other albums of his, as far as I know. One of them's a 1963 ODEON LP (MOCE 1006) called 'Introduction to the Music of India. He features on Side B, along with his wife Vidushi Malabika Kanan singing Raag Darbari (On Side A, its Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitra with Kalyani Roy). Also there's a CD or cassette called 'Live in Concert 1965' in which he sings Kedar, Maru Bihag and Thumri. Unfortunately, I do not know who the publisher is, but I'm certain Tawfiq Saab will know....

  2. Thanks for the information, Kiran! The online HMV/EMi discography let me down -- there were no other listings when I searched for "Kanan" (except non-classical records). There are some recordings on YouTube from private collections but not many.

One of my friends was a longtime disciple of both AT Kanan and his wife at ITC in Kolkata. Maybe I can ask him about other unpublished recordings (although that might risk my pretense at anonymity if he ever sees this post).

    1. Also look here - http://bihaanmusic.com/heritage.php
At least 3 volumes published by Kolkata based Bihaan, meaning at some point generous Mr. Tawfiq sold them. That said, Bihaan's quality can go either way.....

  7. Dear Richard and Kiran,
The links provided above by Tawfiq no longer work. There are in fact three CD's still available on Bihaan by A.T. Kanan (called Pt. A. Kanan in Bihaan catalog)
